With busy schedules and multi-tasking, it’s bound to happen. You will make a mistake with your email and inevitably your readers will call you on it. In fact, you will probably experience this more than once.
When you make a mistake, your first instinct may be to run and hide because you’re embarrassed. It’s only natural. However, there are much better ways to handle things when you make a blunder.
First off, don’t sweat it. Know that it happens to everyone and it shows that you are human. Nobody is perfect and you shouldn’t strive to be, unless you want ulcers and stress.
Also keep in mind that not everything will be your fault. Technology isn’t perfect and sometimes the error is not part of your doing. Email and web servers are notorious for going bonkers when email is being sent; sometimes causing email to not be delivered or the site to crash within minutes of email being delivered. These are things that are beyond your control so there’s no reason to stress it.
When stuff like this happens, whether it was of your doing or not, simply admit the mistake, apologize and ask for forgiveness. Your readers will appreciate the acknowledgement.
Do everything in your power to make it right. If you send out a promotion and the coupon doesn’t work, fix it and let them know. Extend the offer to make up for the time lost. If it isn’t fixable, see what else you can offer them to make up for the error.
Mistakes happen. It’s part of life. The best thing you can do is own up to it, apologize and let your readers know that you are working hard to prevent such things in the future. Then do just that. Learn from your mistakes, test your messages, website and coupons before you send your email and move on knowing you’ve done your best.
